Reaching a PC at home from outside the house is a networking problem before it's a gaming one.

Port forwarding means publishing a door to the internet

Forwarding a port tells your router to accept unsolicited traffic from anywhere and hand it to a machine inside your house. It works, but you've now got a permanently open entrance that you are responsible for keeping safe — and it breaks whenever your ISP changes your address.

UPnP only works if your router cooperates

Automatic port mapping saves you the manual setup, but plenty of routers ship with it disabled, implement it inconsistently, or sit under an ISP-managed device you can't log into at all.

CGNAT takes the option away entirely

Many ISPs now put customers behind carrier-grade NAT, where you share a public address with other subscribers. There is no port to forward, because the address isn't yours. No amount of router configuration fixes this.
